The official Twitter rival “Threads” from Instagram has been announced for a long time. Code-named “Barcelona,” Instagram has been developing a text-based social network to compete with the struggling Twitter and rivals like BlueSky, Mastodon and post news.
Now the Instagram Threads app has officially launched, but due to the unclear legal situation around the Digital Services Act (DSA), you can’t download the Threads app in Europe and Germany, neither in the Apple Appstore nor in the Google Play Store.

Download Threads App from Apple AppStore also in 🇩🇪 Germany (Apple iOS)
Via a small detour you can also install US Apps in the Apple AppStore.
There are 2 possibilities: Either you change your location (country/region) in your Apple AppStore account to another country, e.g. the USA. This is only possible if you don’t have a running Apple content subscription like Apple iTunes or Apple TV.
The workaround for Apple iOS users that should work for everyone:
Simply visit appleid.apple.com/us/ in the Incognito browser and create a new AppleID with location USA.
Then log out of the Apple App Store and log back in with the new AppleID (US).
Download the Instagram Threads app and create your profile.
You can switch the account again.
Download the Threads App as Android APK (Google PlayStore / Android)
For Android users, there is an even easier trick: You can manually download the original Instagram Threads Android APK to your Android device (Google Pixel, Samsung, etc). Just download the Threads APK from APKpure.com, APKmirror.com or APKcombo.com and install it manually (sideloading past the Google Play Store).
You might have to explicitly allow sideloading apps via Chrome, because there are always security risks involved. However, the three recommended sites were clean at last check. Be careful not to accidentally click the “Fake Download Buttons” in the ads of the websites. If you want to be sure, run an Android security app again.
Once you have downloaded and installed the Threads Android APK, you can log in with your Instagram profile.
