New regulations - Betting and gambling has never been so easy in Germany

Germany has historically a complex and fragmented legal framework for regulating gambling activities.

In October 2020, a new law has passed the houses of parlament known as the “State Treaty on Gambling 2021” (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag 2021) was approved by the state governments. This law aimed to establish a more uniform and regulated gambling market throughout Germany.

The law introduced a licensing process for online sports betting and virtual slot machine games. Online casinos were to be legalized, subject to certain restirictions.

The number of licenses for online sports betting providers was limited until 2021. This was intended to prevent an oversaturation of the betting and gambling market.

  • Player Protection Measures:

Stricter player protection measures were introduced, including limits on deposits and betting amounts for players to mitigate the risks of problematic cases of gambling in the society

  • Taxation:

Operators are subject to taxation at a rate based on the gross gaming revenue earned by the players

 

  • Enforcement:

The law was intended to create a single regulatory body to oversee and enforce regulations across the country that did not exist before the law
