Want a new job? More job vacancies than ever before in Germany

Companies ares searching professionals

The number of jobs currently advertised in Germany has once again reached an all-time high. In the fourth quarter of 2022, employers were looking for new employees for 1.98 million positions.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, there were more jobs advertised than at any time in 10 years.

Across Germany, more jobs were advertised in the fourth quarter of 2022 than ever before. With 1.98 million job offers, employers in the Federal Republic set a new record. This is according to the latest job survey by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

Previously, the number of vacancies had reached its all-time high in the second quarter of last year. At that time, 1.93 million unfilled positions were advertised. In the third quarter of 2022, the number of vacancies then fell slightly to 1.82 million – a development that clearly did not reveal a trend.

It is also interesting to note that most of the advertised positions are available to be filled immediately. This is true of 1.63 million job openings, while around 352,500 job postings envisage hiring talent at a later date.

Vacancy rate rises as well

But it was not just the number of vacancies that set a new record in the fourth quarter of 2022. The so-called vacancy rate – the ratio of vacancies to be filled immediately and total company demand for personnel – also reached a record high. Here, the total company demand for personnel corresponds to the sum of employment subject to social security contributions and vacancies to be filled immediately. For every 100 workers demanded by companies, there are around 5 vacancies. In the third quarter of last year, the figure was 4 job postings.

The IAB Job Survey has been conducted four times a year since 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the IAB researchers examined the responses of around 14,000 employers from all sectors of the economy.
