The approximately 21 million pensioners will receive more money as planned from July 1. The federal cabinet approved a pension increase of 4.39 percent in the West and 5.86 percent in the East, the news agency dpa and Reuters reported, citing government circles. Federal Social Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) had already published the figures in March.
In addition to the pension increase, there will also be an equalization of the pension value in the east and west almost 33 years after German reunification, a year earlier than planned. The ordinance passed by the Cabinet still has to be approved by the Bundesrat, but this is a formality. The Bundestag does not have to approve it.

Pensions normally rise every year on July 1. They are based on wage trends in the country. However, if wages fall, a so-called pension guarantee also prevents retirement benefits. In the worst case, there are then zero increases, as happened two years ago in the wake of the Corona pandemic or in 2010 after the financial crisis.
